The homeless rarely find themselves in the limelight, but amateur photographer Lee Jeffries has made them the focus of his work. He’s produced a haunting set of black-and-white portraits of people living on the streets of Europe and the U.S. Every face is shown in incredible detail and is full of emotion. I found these originally on Flavorwire and fell in love with Bruce Davidson‘s collection of photos of NYC Subway photos from the 1980s. They remind me of the gritty, realistic eyes of Melissa Weimer’s Lake. Sky. Vans, Tim Carpenter‘s Pastoralia and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe‘s latest Anthology: Faces, Places, Spaces.  Here’s an excerpt from the original article:

Children hovering by the subway window to the glow of Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel. A man cowering from a pointed gun. A young vandal at work in a tagged subway car. A punk brooding at a station. In the mid-80s, photographer Bruce Davidson captured New York City’s subway commuters in a ground-breaking series first published by Aperture, freezing the subject in powerful, split-second vignettes.

The Illinois-born photographer has described his subjects as “the people in the subway, their flesh juxtaposed against the graffiti, the penetrating effect of the strobe light itself, and even the hollow darkness of the tunnels, inspired an aesthetic that goes unnoticed by passengers who are trapped underground, hiding behind masks, and closed off from each other.” Decades later, the images seem familiar yet distant, cinematic yet tangible. Those who know me know I carry a camera around almost everywhere I go. And each year, I try to record the best events of my year and compile them into a scrapbook on Flickr. Up until recently, I had to remove each previous year from Flickr because they wouldn’t allow free users to have more than two sets. And, as I’m paying for a Google Picasaweb Account, I couldn’t justify also paying for Flickr. This year, they increased the number of sets for free users, thankfully, and so I’ve resumed my “Best of” collection for 2010.

It was a tough year to limit the photos. I met about 50 family members throughout Italy (and ate and drank like a king), traveled to San Francisco to meet some colleagues and friends, and celebrated three weddings. That, commingled with various barbecues, holidays and karaoke, made 2010 a really fun year to compile.

New York’s famous City Hall subway station, one of the most gorgeous gems in the world of mass transit, has been closed for decades. Now it can be viewed again by in-the-know riders of the 6 train. Here’s how.

The City Hall Station was the original southern terminus of the first “Manhattan Main Line” built by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) Company. The line, opened in 1904, was intended to be a showpiece and crown jewel of the new subway system. Unlike the rest of the line, City Hall featured tall tile arches, brass fixtures, and skylights that ran along the entire curve of the station — a sort of miniature Grand Central Station. In fact, befitting the elegance of the station, it was even the chosen place for hanging the commemorative plaques recognizing the achievement of building the underground train system.

However, thanks to an immediate need to expand the original IRT line with newer, longer cars, the City Hall Station was closed just a few decades later on December 31, 1945. The gorgeous wrought iron skylights were covered over and the station was boarded up.

Although it would spend the next few decades closed to the public, the tracks were still used as the turnaround point for the 6 train after its final Brooklyn Bridge stop. So, while the station was lost to the ages, it was not forgotten.

About a decade ago, New York City began the long and arduous process of restoring the City Hall Station as New York’s transit museum, but security concerns that started before September 11, 2001 fully killed the idea after the twin towers fell.

Still, although it’s not open to the general public, there’s a way in-the-know New York subway riders can still see this famous and beautiful architectural glimpse at the city’s past. The 6 train used to make all passengers leave the train at the Brooklyn Bridge stop, but no longer.

If you have a little extra time, you can stay on the train and view the City Hall Station as the train makes its turnaround. We plan on doing just that later this week.

Are passengers allowed to ride the 6 past the last stop to see the City Hall ghost station?/strong>
Yes, you are. In fact there is a bulletin specifically telling us to NOT kick anyone off at Brooklyn Bridge. Brooklyn Bridge downtown is treated as a regular stop, and conductors are not supposed to waste any extra time there. Anyone who tries to kick you off there is not doing their job.”There is a legitimate reason for this. Bleecker St. still doesn’t have an underpass for the uptown platform, so passengers transferring from the F to the 6 and who want to go uptown are gonna have to either stay on the train, or do a crossover at Canal St or Brooklyn Bridge, which is likely gonna result in them boarding the same uptown 6 train they were already on.
